Trainers

Ben Cooper

Ben is a creative industries leader with over 25 years' experience in Audio, Visual & Social Media content, Journalism, Live Events and, of course, Radio. He is passionate about driving innovation and transformation in the industry to address the new ways that audiences, artists and advertisers interact.

He started his love for radio by making cups of tea at his local radio station, before going on to become a journalist and then presenter, before landing a producing role at BBC Radio 1 working with Chris Moyles, Jo Whiley and Nicky Campbell. After working at 95.8 Capital FM, he returned to the BBC ultimately becoming Controller of Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network for 8 years. In that time, Ben oversaw the development of the Live Lounge, Radio 1's Teen Awards and Radio 1's Big Weekend - bringing artists like Taylor Swift, Foo Fighters and Jay Z to perform in Norwich, Carlisle and Hackney. As Controller he was responsible for the overall leadership and editorial content of the three stations, whose reach was a combined weekly audience of over 12 million on radio, 10 million social users and 14 million weekly video viewers.

During the Covid lockdown, Ben went to Bauer Media Audio becoming their Chief Content & Music Officer, responsible for the overall leadership and editorial content of their portfolio of UK radio stations, News division, Music teams, Video production and the Live Events team. Whilst there he increased the diversity of new and established presenters, as well as the front page story of signing Ken Bruce, the UK’s most listened to radio show host, which resulted in GHR becoming commercial radio’s most listened to UK station.

Ben puts down part of his success to his dyslexic thinking which often means he sees solutions or trends that others miss, and this added to his journalistic editorial experience, provides a sharp clear narrative. He is seen as an exceptional communicator, simplify complexity into clear messages, so that everyone knows what they are trying to accomplish and why, whether that is hitting multi-million pound targets or being a force for good in society.
