AI in Radio Sales : Your New Assistant, Not Your Replacement.
In the recent Learning Waves training course AI in Radio Sales, led by Joanne Sweeney from The Digital Training Institute, we looked at how different AI Tools can help radio sales teams work smarter, not harder (and without completely handing over the sales pitch to a robot).
AI can be brilliant for research, brainstorming, prospecting, coming up with campaign ideas, visualising and data presentation. Give it the right information and it can help you build a pitch, identify potential advertisers, explore different approaches and even challenge your critical thinking. The crucial part in this collaboration, according to Joanne, is to keep ‘the human in the loop’. Think: ‘AI+ME is Better!’
One particularly useful exercise involved creating a virtual panel of business experts in Claude to bounce ideas off. When given a fictional World Cup campaign for an Irish radio station and an airline, Claude came up with some interesting ideas, including selling the fan journey, rather than simply selling match coverage. Think dynamic creative and campaigns built around the excitement before, during and after the games.
Of course, there are problems with any AI tools on the market at the moment, where it makes confident assumptions that can be completely wrong, also known as hallucinations. Think about it as questions you didn’t know on your Leaving Cert papers but still made an attempt to get some marks by guessing the answer (we all done it). Therein lies the lesson: every output needs human oversight and fact-checking.
The good news is Chat GPT, Claude, Autopilot, Google Gemini (and others) can be trained. The more information you give them about your station, audience, existing advertisers, available inventory and commercial limitations, the more useful and accurate their suggestions become. Joanne recommends using paid versions of AI agents to protect your data as well as extending the memory of the AI agent for improved prompt output.
It’s important to remember that AI agents are your assistants, but they cannot do everything. AI can't build real relationships, read the room, make the judgement call, understand a client's personality, negotiate a tricky deal or own accountability.
The Tried & Tested AI Toolkit for Radio Sales
Let’s have a look at the favourite ‘AI assistants’ Joanne shared during the training session, each with its own strengths.
Claude
Anthropic’s Claude (currently topping AI Leaderboards) is a particularly useful tool for research, developing campaign ideas and putting your thinking through its paces before you ever sit down with a client.
One of our favourite ideas from the session was using Claude to create a panel of industry experts who can critically analyse your campaign idea, challenge your assumptions and give you different perspectives before you make the pitch.
Tip: Ask Claude to present its thinking as a matrix. This can give you a much more structured and useful output, saving you time wading through a mountain of AI waffle.
Claude can also turn data and research into impressive infographics and visual reports, which can be downloaded as PDFs or even created as HTML files that can be shared with a client in a link format.
ChatGPT Image
Need to show a client what an idea could actually look like? ChatGPT Image can be a great starting point for creating campaign visuals, concepts and creative directions.
It becomes even more useful when paired with Canva, where your brand kit, colours, fonts and templates can help bring those ideas into a more professional, on-brand format.
Think of AI as the creative brainstormer and Canva as the one making sure nobody accidentally sends the client a presentation in six different fonts.
Gemini Notebook
Google’s Gemini Notebook is particularly useful when you have your own material to work with. Upload your files and use them to research, brainstorm, analyse information and extract useful data.
And it doesn't stop there. That information can be turned into impressive infographics, presentation slides, video content with voiceover, or even a conversational podcast, giving you multiple ways to bring your research to life.
So, What's the Verdict? These tools won't replace the salesperson, the creative thinker or the person who knows the client inside out. But they can save you some legwork, help you challenge your ideas and get you from “I've got no idea where to start…” to “Here's what we could do.”
And that’s exactly what Tried & Tested (So You Don’t Have To) is all about.
We test the AI tools, find the useful bits, and leave you with the ones actually worth trying, so you can spend less time figuring out the tech and more time getting on with the job.
