How Independent Radio Connects Communities this St Patrick's Day.
When big national days like St Patrick’s Day come around, you really notice the role independent radio plays across Ireland. Parades fill the streets. Towns and villages come alive. Irish celebrations pop up in cities all over the world. But back home, it’s local radio that keeps people connected sharing the excitement, the updates, the music and the stories that make the day feel special. Many stations such as Radio Nova 100, Ireland's Classic Hits, Dublin's Q102 and many more took to the streets to speak to the public who came from all corners of the world just to celebrate St Patrick's Day.
Radio in Ireland is still incredibly strong. The 2026 JNLR Reports revealed that on an average day, 3.45 million adults tune in, creating more than 14.5 million listening connections each week. That’s not just impressive, it shows the level of trust people continue to place in their local stations. When something important is happening, whether it’s a community parade, a fundraiser, or Irish voices being celebrated abroad, people still turn on the radio.
Bringing Celebrations to Life
Across the country, independent stations were right at the heart of the celebrations. Broadcasters were out on the streets covering parades and local events. Irish music filled the airwaves. Stations such as Today FM increased Irish language content during Seachtain na Gaeilge, and listeners could rely on their local presenters for news, travel updates and that familiar sense of community. Radio Kerry invited puplis from local schools to send in Good Luck messages to Jessie Buckley as Gaeilge. South East Radio's presenter took on the challenge of learning a new word every day and they invited listeners to share their Irish words with them. Galway Bay FM presenters were put to the test and asked how much Irish they knew. These moments remind us that radio is more than just entertainment. It’s a companion. It’s a connector. And on national days, it becomes a shared space where people feel part of something bigger.
Irish Talent Celebrated Abroad
This year also showed how Irish radio voices continue to represent the country far beyond our shores. Presenters Rebecca Shekleton and Brendan O’Loughlin from 98FM were named Grand Marshals of the Irish Times Bar St Patrick’s Day Parade in Prague, leading the celebrations through the heart of the city from Wenceslas Square. Speaking afterwards, they described it as “such an amazing experience… it was incredible to see our little country being celebrated abroad. It’s genuinely heartwarming to see another country want to celebrate us.” It’s moments like this that show how Irish broadcasting talent helps carry our culture and sense of identity around the world.
A Big Day for Irish Music
Back home, Today FM dedicated the entire day to celebrating Irish music, counting down the 100 Greatest Irish Songs as voted by listeners. In a result that got plenty of people talking, Zombie by The Cranberries took the number one spot.
Listeners were also treated to a live performance of Galway Girl from Mundy and Sharon Shannon, bringing a real buzz to the celebrations. To keep the music going, the station even launched a dedicated stream on the GoLoud app so listeners could relive the full countdown a great reminder that radio continues to grow and connect audiences in new ways.
WLR FM also highlighted Ireland's music success by playing Irish tunes all day. Listeners were invited to send in their requests on St. Patrick's Day.
Why This Matters for Learning Waves
Days like St Patrick’s Day don’t just come together on air by accident. Behind every outside broadcast, live link or special programme is a skilled team making it happen. It takes confident presenters. It takes producers who can think on their feet. It takes technical teams who can deliver live coverage without missing a beat.
At Learning Waves, supporting those skills is what we do every day. By investing in training and development across independent radio, we help stations continue to serve their audiences in meaningful ways not just during national celebrations, but all year round.
The Takeaway
Independent radio remains one of Ireland’s most trusted and community focused media platforms. National moments like St Patrick’s Day remind us just how powerful local voices can be bringing people together, celebrating culture and keeping communities informed and connected. With continued support and investment in skills, independent radio will continue to thrive and Learning Waves is proud to be part of that journey.
