Learning Waves Secures Funding from Coimisiún na Meán for 2026

Learning Waves Secures Funding from Coimisiún na Meán for 2026.

  • 18th February, 2026

We are delighted to share today’s announcement that Learning Waves has been awarded funding under the new Media Skills and Development Programme from Coimisiún na Meán.

A total of €548,103 has been allocated across 28 successful applicants, supporting a wide range of initiatives designed to strengthen skills, innovation, and sustainability across Ireland’s media sector. This investment recognises the vital role that training and professional development play in ensuring a strong future for commercial radio.

Investing in People, Leadership and Wellbeing

With this support, Learning Waves will continue to deliver a comprehensive programme of training and development for the independent commercial radio sector, including:

  • GEDI Lead Training and Masterclasses for radio professionals
(supporting good governance, equality, diversity and inclusion)
  • Leadership development through our Future Leaders Programme
  • Senior-level training for CEOs, content leads and department managers
  • Ongoing implementation of the Media Strong Wellbeing Charter, promoting healthier and more sustainable workplaces across the sector

These initiatives are designed to equip radio teams with the skills needed to adapt, lead and thrive in an evolving media landscape.

Continuing to Support the Next Generation of Journalists

The funding will also enable Learning Waves to continue delivering our Award Winning Journalism Graduate Programme, which provides hands-on industry training and real-world experience in commercial radio stations across Ireland.

As part of our 2026 delivery, we will place a particular focus on supporting graduates with proficiency in the Irish language, helping to strengthen linguistic diversity and expand opportunities for Irish-language content within the sector.

Strengthening the Future of Commercial Radio

Speaking about the funding announcement today Learning Waves Network Director Teresa Hanratty said: “This funding represents a significant investment in the people who power Ireland’s commercial radio industry — from emerging journalists to senior leadership. By supporting skills development, wellbeing, and inclusive leadership, the Media Skills and Development Programme is helping to build a more resilient, innovative and future-focused sector.”

Learning Waves is proud to partner with Coimisiún na Meán in delivering these initiatives and looks forward to working with stations and participants across the country throughout 2026.
