How Radio Creators Are Bringing Community Spirit to Christmas.
As the festive season begins to take shape, Episode 33 of RadioTalks turns the spotlight towards the generosity and creativity happening across Ireland’s audio landscape. This month, the conversation focuses on how presenters, producers, and station teams are finding thoughtful ways to support people who need it most at Christmas — and how authentic community connection remains at the heart of great broadcasting.
Reviving a Much-Loved Christmas Toy Drive
KCLR’s journalist Edwina Grace joined the episode to talk about the return of their Christmas Toy Drive, an initiative that has meant a great deal to families in Carlow and Kilkenny over the years. After a brief break last Christmas due to staffing challenges, the team is bringing the project back with excitement and renewed purpose.
The Toy Drive supports children who will spend the holiday period in St. Luke’s General Hospital, as well as families connected to Amber Women’s Refuge. This year, Amber has asked for vouchers rather than physical toys, allowing women to choose exactly what they need for themselves and their children. It’s a thoughtful shift that puts dignity and choice at the centre of the giving.
Edwina explained that small hospitals often lack basic distractions for young patients. Many parents arrive without toys, books, or anything to keep a child occupied as they face long waits or unexpected overnight stays. Donations such as colouring books, games or storybooks can make a world of difference in easing anxiety for both children and parents. The team also hopes to stock the paediatric waiting area with items that will help families feel more at ease during difficult moments.
Every year, the generosity of local people is clear. The station’s boardroom transforms into a festive collection space, overflowing with gifts before everything is sorted, wrapped, and delivered. Surplus items often go to St. Vincent de Paul and local family resource centres, ensuring every donation reaches someone who truly needs it. The Toy Drive also runs in tandem with KCLR’s long-standing on-air hamper auction with the Lions Club, which raises thousands annually for community support.
A Comedy Fundraiser with Heart at SPIN 1038
The episode then shifted to a very different but equally creative approach from SPIN 1038. Breakfast show producer Callum Farmer shared how the team is hosting a one-night comedy event in aid of Dublin Simon Community, bringing together entertainment and impact in a fresh way.
Rather than run a traditional charity appeal, the team created Emma, Dave & Aisling’s Big Night of Laughs, taking place at The Sugar Club. Featuring well-known comedians including Emma Doran, Michael Fry, Rachel Galvo and Shane Daniel Byrne, the event invites listeners to enjoy a night out while supporting a vital organisation that provides services for people experiencing homelessness.
In an unexpected twist, presenters Emma and Dave will perform stand-up for the very first time. Their preparation from nerves to coaching sessions with impressionists is being shared across the show and social platforms, turning the entire lead-up into an engaging content journey for listeners. While only a limited number of fans can attend in person, the SPIN team will bring the experience to a wider audience through recordings and follow-up on-air content.
For Callum, the goal is simple: create something the audience can genuinely connect with while supporting people who need help during the most challenging time of the year. The event brings together creativity, collaboration and community impact in a way that feels true to the show’s spirit.
Celebrating Kindness Through Audio
Episode 33 is a reminder that radio and audio aren’t just about entertainment, they’re powerful tools for connection. Whether it’s toys for children spending Christmas in hospital or comedy that raises funds for homelessness services, these initiatives show what can happen when creators use their platforms with empathy and intention.
