From Work Experience to CEO: Michael Byrne’s Inspiring Radio Journey at WLR FM

From Work Experience to CEO: Michael Byrne’s Inspiring Radio Journey at WLR FM.

  • 13th July, 2025

a-end="236" data-start="154">Michael Byrne’s story is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of local radio. From his earliest days as a schoolboy in Tramore with dreams of launching a student station, to becoming one of Ireland’s youngest and most respected radio CEOs, Michael’s journey is deeply woven into the fabric of WLR FM.

A Love for Radio That Started Early

Long before Spotify and streaming services, Michael’s evenings were spent tuning into WLR FM, discovering new music while doing his homework. That childhood fascination never left. After a brief stint pursuing a teaching career, a chance newspaper ad led him to a new radio course in Waterford. He applied, was accepted, and soon found himself walking through the doors of WLR FM in September 2001, just days before 9/11, on work experience. He never left.

Rising Through the Ranks

Michael’s career trajectory is a rare example of complete immersion in all facets of radio. He started in commercial production and tech ops, edited documentaries, mixed ads on weekends, and even worked alongside industry icons like Brian DeSalvo. Though he once dreamed of being a presenter, Michael recognized early that his strengths lay behind the scenes. He leaned into technical and operational roles, eventually becoming Head of Music, Assistant Programme Director, and Programme Director before being appointed CEO in 2023.

Leadership Rooted in Learning

Michael credits much of his development to strong mentorship from WLR’s former CEO, Des Whelan. Under Des’s guidance, Michael not only gained experience but also pursued further education, including courses in HR and innovation. This culture of continuous learning and upskilling remains central to Michael’s leadership philosophy today.

A Modern Vision for Radio

As the media landscape has shifted, Michael has kept WLR ahead of the curve. Under his watch, the station has invested heavily in digital, aunching Alexa skills, podcast studios, and multimedia production capabilities. Yet, at its core, WLR remains true to its community-focused mission.

“Content is king,” Michael affirms, and it show with presenters like Damien Tiernan redefining mid-morning talk radio, and a dedicated, multi-talented team producing high quality journalism, WLR FM continues to raise the bar in local broadcasting.

Award-Winning Excellence

While Michael is modest about accolades, WLR’s track record speaks for itself. The station has been recognized numerous times at the IMRO Radio Awards, a reflection not just of talent, but of a relentless drive for innovation and quality.

Still, Michael prefers to look forward rather than dwell on past wins. “There’s no future in the past,” he says, always pushing the team to evolve, experiment, and deliver exceptional radio content.

Future-Proofing with Purpose

Michael’s strategy for the future is clear: invest in people, technology, and storytelling. From embracing AI tools to nurturing new talent through initiatives like Learning Waves, he ensures WLR stays relevant in a fast-changing world without losing its local soul.

And if there's one piece of advice he offers to those starting out in radio today? “Listen, listen and listen again.”

A Humble Legacy in the Making

From unpaid intern to visionary CEO, Michael Byrne’s journey is proof that with passion, adaptability, and a deep respect for the craft, local radio can still thrive, and lead in the digital age.
