Human Voices, Smarter Storytelling: AI’s Role in Modern Radio.
In the first module of our AI for Radio course, we were joined by Joanne Sweeney from the Digital Training Institute to explore an Introduction to AI.
This module offers key insights into what AI means for your radio station, newsroom, listeners, and the stories you tell. Here are some key takeaways as we begin to embrace AI. The goal isn’t to fear it but to approach it ethically, intelligently, and creatively.
What’s the Big Deal With AI?
AI is already part of our daily lives, whether it’s asking Alexa a question, getting directions from Siri, or seeing Netflix recommend, “Because you watched this, you might like that.” That’s AI in action through pattern recognition. Quietly and steadily, it has been woven into our routines, and it’s only getting smarter.
AI itself isn’t new; it’s been in development since the 1950s. What’s new is the speed and scale of its recent evolution. With tools like ChatGPT and Claude becoming mainstream, we’ve entered a new era of 'agentic AI' where systems can operate independently, collaborate, learn, and serve as capable digital assistants.
Social media platforms serve each of us a personalised newsfeed not curated by editors, but by algorithms that reflect our preferences. This creates a bias, as we’re fed content that reinforces what we already believe, leading to digital echo chambers. In contrast, radio still relies on human editorial judgement, editors, journalists, and presenters making informed choices. Online, it’s the algorithm that makes those calls. That’s the shift and the challenge.
How Radio Can Use AI Right Now
AI is not a threat to radio; it’s our co-pilot and creative partner. Here’s how it can support you.
1. Transcription in Seconds
Interview a guest, then use AI to transcribe it instantly. Take your biggest interview of the week from Drive Time, Morning Ireland, Current Affairs and turn it into a long read. Radio builds trust, and audiences also like to read what they hear.
2. Promo Writing and Brainstorming
If you’re collaborating with a car dealership on an electric vehicle giveaway and struggling to come up with ideas, AI can help spark inspiration. Need a 12-second sting for a weather sponsorship? AI can get you 80% of the way there. You’ll still add your creative touch, but it takes the pressure off the blank page and helps overcome creative blocks.
3. Social Media Made Easy
Got a press release that could be turned into bite-sized content? AI can quickly repurpose it into a Facebook post, tweet, or even a short news bulletin. Remember, the final edit should always come from you. Keeping a human in the loop ensures accuracy, tone, and trust.
4. Audio Editing Magic
Emerging tools like Adobe Enhance or Descript can remove background noise or clean up rough Vox pop for publishing and broadcasting. It's a game changer for journalists working in the field.
5. Voice Cloning
Voice cloning can be a helpful tool. For instance, allowing your voice to deliver a bulletin while you’re chasing a breaking story. However, it must be used responsibly. Consent, clear policies, and transparency are essential, as using cloned voices without disclosure crosses an ethical line.
Where Does That Leave Us?
Roles are evolving, which means that in the future, your job might involve managing AI assistants. Whether you’re a radio producer, journalist, editor, or presenter, AI isn’t here to replace you - it’s here to enhance your skills by taking over routine tasks.
Both the World Economic Forum and Harvard emphasise that soft skills like creativity, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking are more vital than ever. This should encourage you to focus on what truly makes your station uniquely human.
