Learning Waves nominated for a Media Literacy Ireland Award

Learning Waves nominated for a Media Literacy Ireland Award.

  • 12th April, 2023

We are delighted to announce that Learning Waves has been nominated for the best Youth-Led Media Literacy Intervention at the Media Literacy Ireland Awards 2023. Learning Waves’ TY Media Week has been shortlisted under this category amongst many other initiatives for young people.

Media Literacy Ireland is an independent association of members committed to the promotion of media literacy across Ireland. It enables media literacy stakeholders, and their aim is to create a platform for facilitating dialogue and the exchange of ideas and encouraging sustainable media literacy projects. Learning Waves is a member of MLI amongst many other creative organisations such as RTÉ, Coimisún na Meán and TG4.

The aim of the MLI Awards programme is to recognise and raise awarreness of the magnificent work that is being done in Ireland to promote media literacy. TY Media Week provides Transition Year Students with a unique opportunity to get involved in the creation of content for broadcast on radio stations across the country. It is a hands-on experience involving idea generation, audio recording and editing, interviewing, and producing their own radio show to be broadcasted. A total of 30 radio stations will take part in the programme between September 2021 and May 2023 and students can apply for the radio station in their area.

MLI recognises the success of this project and the judges noted :  “We were impressed by the use of an immersive learning environment to equip young people with the skills to tell their own stories. With innovative and creative methodologies, it demonstrates a hands-on approach to developing media literacy skills while creating content.”

We are thrilled with the news of our nomination and look forward to hearing the results next Tuesday!  All nominees have been invited to a closed online event on Tuesday 18th April 2023 where the winners will be announced.  The online event will include the Judging Panel and the nominees.  The winners of each category will be invited to the offices of Coimisiún na Meán at midday on Wednesday 19th April to collect their awards in person from the newly appointed Commissioner for Media Development, Rónán Ó Domhnaill and participate in a photo opportunity.

Stay tuned for updates.
