Learning Waves secures funding for 2022 Journalism Graduate Programme

Learning Waves secures funding for 2022 Journalism Graduate Programme.

  • 15th February, 2022

Learning Waves is delighted to announce that it has secured funding for its Journalism Graduate Programme for 2022.  The 2022 programme will build on the 2021 programme and the initial 2019 pilot programme.  The programme will see 10 graduates placed across 10 Independent Radio Stations for a period of 5 months.  The graduates will experience hands on the working of a newsroom, sports department and current affairs department in a radio station.  The graduates will be assigned a mentor in the radio station they are placed in who will work with them for the duration of the 5 months. In parallel to this, the graduates will take part in a 5 month training programme organised by Learning Waves.

The programme will be supported financially by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Skillnet Ireland, Learning Waves Members and Learning Waves.  In assessing the application for the 2022 programme, the assesors acknowledged the ambition of the 2022 programme and the emphasis on inclusivity and equality of access.  The programme will allow graduates to build their portfolios and create new programme content which will be reflective of stations audiences.  In the 2022 programme, a podcast channel will be developed which will showcase and share the students' work.

There is increased funding for the 2022 programme which will be used to support the graduates as they participate in the programme.

More details of the 2022 programme for stations and graduates will become available in the coming weeks.

The graduates who are currently completing the 2021 programme are as follows :

  • Andrew Martin, Off the Ball
  • Rebecca Daly, LMFM
  • Tommy Stenson, Shannonside
  • Shannon Redmond, KCLR 96FM
  • Ciaron Noble, South East Radio
  • Nicky Anderson, Corks Red FM
  • Cailie Murphy, Radio Kerry
  • Fiona Cooney, Newstalk
  • Ciara Mannion, Galway Bay FM
  • Edwina Cheasty, Ocean FM

So far, three of the graduates who have completed the programme have been offered full-time positions in the radio station in which they completed their placement.  The remaining graduates are due to complete their placement by end of March 2022.
