Course Aims

The overarching aim of this training programme is to foster the media literacy skills and confidence of a small group of media professionals within the independent radio sector. The intention is that these media professionals will then be able to act as media literacy ambassadors or informal trainers across their sector, and possibly beyond.

The demonstrate the relevance and importance of media literacy skills within the sector, the media literacy learning will be packaged within a wider radio industry training programme.  On completion of the training it is anticipated that the attendees would be able to provide support and advice about media literacy topics to their colleagues and potentially participate in a larger sectoral network.

Course Content

Media Literacy skills are used on a daily basis in the sector, on air and online and this training will:

  • Help media producers create more reliable content.
  • Empower media producers to help audiences recognise and value accurate and reliable content.
  • Help members of staff to reflect on their own use of, and relationship with the media
  • Raise awareness of the need for continuous skills development in this area.
  • Provide clarity and understanding for others and help set standards in this area.
  • Help media producers and creators better understand their role in helping the audience to better manage their media.
  • Help to address bias in media content.
  • Improve consistency in media literacy messaging across the sector.
  • Improve understanding of, and resilience to, misinformation and disinformation.
  • Promote ethical journalism practices.
  • Facilitate wider sectoral learning as a result of a panel of Media Literacy trainers who will have the skills and knowledge that will allow them to promote Media Literacy in the sector.

The content includes the following modules:

Module 1: Evaluating Media Messages

  • The importance of critical media consumption for individuals, for society and for the health of the media ecosystem.
  • Representation and how media messages are constructed
  • Helping audiences to analyse media messages
  • Understanding media ownership and its influence
  • The role of algorithms in influencing media choices and media consumption
  • Recognising bias in content

Module 2: Effective, Creative and Ethical Content Creation

  • Understanding the importance of ethical and responsible use of media (civic media literacy)
  • Creating and sharing digital content creatively and responsibly
  • Users as media creators and the importance of self-expression
  • Understanding, recognising and counteracting media / personal bias
  • Ethical use of algorithms
  • Fair representation in the media

Module 3: Media and Wellbeing

  • Personal wellbeing for media makers (mental health, safety, security)
  • Personal wellbeing for media consumers (mental health, rights and responsibilities)
  • The role of digital media platforms on wellbeing

Module 4: Information Integrity

  • Understanding and identifying misinformation/disinformation
  • Editing and digital media manipulation
  • Evaluating credibility of sources
  • Fact-checking techniques
  • The role of news media/journalism and understanding media bias
  • Understanding Bias
  • The role of news media/journalism in promoting critical thinking (best practices)

Module 5: AI in the Media

  • Opportunities
  • Risks
  • AI and Media

Module 6: Peer to Peer Support

  • Confidence building
  • Mentoring
  • Mock training /  presentation sessions

Who is this content for?

This course is aimed at those wishing to become Media Literacy trainers across the Independent Radio Sector.

Training Method

The course will be delivered online via Zoom for the first 5 modules and the final module will take place in person on 27th March 2025.  Training dates are 14th January, 28th January, 11th February, 24th February, 11th March, 27th March 2025
