Learning Waves Skillnet was delighted to welcome Sue Ellis and Andrew Wilson from the BBC Academy to Dublin in May to deliver a 2 day Effective Newsroom Leader course.  The course was booked out with 12 news editors from national, regional and local radio stations attending the event.  The course was an intensive two day event and covered topics on the following :
  • The Qualities of a Good Leader
  • Leadership Challenges
  • Listening as a leader
  • Editorial dilemmas
  • Your vision for your newsroom
  • Running effective meetings
  • Leading original journalism
  • Editorial values in action
  • Giving effective feedback
  • Managing up
  • Impartial reporting
  • Your Leadership
The two days were highly practical with a focus on case studies, practical situations and role playing along with excellent interaction from the group who learned from each other aswell as from the trainers.  Some of the key learnings from the course were that as a newsroom leader you should  :
'Give your team a clear sense of where things are going and their role in the future', 'build powerful and collaborative relationships both inside and outside your station', 'be brave, if you are not feelin brave, ACT IT', 'your first instinct should be to publish, not to find reasons why you can't, start with why you can', 'ensure that you have a clear vision for your output and that this vision is communicated to everyone, once you have your vision, STICK TO IT', 'your framework is what makes your stuff great', 'do you know what your creative looks like, sounds like and what do you mean by creative' and remember 'original journalism is......using words brilliantly'.

Comments from some of the participants following the course included :

'Overall I think this was one of the best Learning Waves courses I've been on, and I'd recommend it to anyone working in radio news. It's also great to bring people in similar positions in stations together to sound out some of the challenges and issues we face  - sometimes on our own - on a daily basis'. John Cooke, Clare FM

“My recent training session with Sue and Andrew reinforced the importance of the Editor’s role in the newsroom.  It inspired me to revisit and improve current structures, gave me a new burst of energy and passion and left me recharged to confidently put my shoulder  back to the wheel... “Teena Gates, 98FM

Many of the participants have implemented some of the ideas discussed during the two days back in their newsrooms and it is hoped to follow up with this group on further workshops in September.  The full two day course will be run again in 2013 for those of you who missed out on this one!!
