Learning Waves Skillnet was delighted to welcome Ben Cooper, Controller, BBC Radio 1 & IXtra to Dublin on 2nd March 2015.  This was a unique opportunity for programme directors and presenters to meet Ben in advance of his appearance at Radio Days in Milan on 17th March 2015.  The session was held in the Gibson Hotel in Dublin and was facilitated by Niall Power, Breakfast Presenter and Head of Music at Beat 102-103FM in Waterford.

Ben told the audience that they should be thinking about 3 things :
  • What does success look like?  According to Cooper, the radio sector needs to ask itself this question a lot more, is it about time spent with the brand, is it about the bottom line, is it about brand awareness, what is it that you think should be the results of a project you are working on?
  • Distribution -  in the UK 1 in 7 young people have a radio, 1 in 3 young people have an ipad.  In this regard you need to be thinking about what you are going to do to get your content to young people. How are will the young audience 'bump' into your content?
  • Get your audience into your building - the best way is to get your audience into your building and just by interacting with them you will soak up so many ideas, ideas on how they are or might be using your brand and on what devices they are using.  You can give them training once in the building but most of all Cooper maintains that  you will get ideas from them and you will be better connected to your audience as a result.
